Hundreds of years ago, as martial arts were being handed down from family member to family member, there weren't any set fees for lessons. Students would give what they could afford, and of themselves, to help their teacher and his family, in exchange for the knowledge of the arts. Since the creation of commercial martial arts schools this tradition has been lost.
It's understandable that teachers in the world today charge set fees
for lessons. The costs of operating a commercial school are
quite high: rent, lights, phone, heat, insurance,
advertising, training equipment and many others. Most
teachers find it difficult to pay their personal bills after they have
paid all of the expenses at the school. Nearly
all martial arts teachers have a full-time job in addition to
running their school.
Sensei Evans resigned from his position as a software
engineer in the summer of 2006, so he could dedicate more of his life
to teaching.
A big part of the lessons at Evans Kempo Karate are the act of
generosity and the power of believing. The phrases "If you
can believe it... you can achieve it!" and "When you change
the way you look at things, the things you look at change." are often
spoken in class by the teacher. Sensei
Evans believes in leading by example and by running his school
in this way he shows how one truly can achieve success in life by
helping others. Sensei Evans looks at his school as a great
tool that can benefit the community, and believes that by offering
lessons for donations the whole community will be impacted in a
positive way.
At Evans Kempo Karate we have been blessed with a unique
student base.
In all of the years that Sensei Evans has been teaching, he
has noticed that many students have given extra money or their time to
help out the school. Many students at our school become more
like extended family members. With this being the case
we decided to offer group classes on a donation basis.
In offering classes for donations it is our hope that more
people in our local communities will be able to benefit from the
practice of peaceful martial arts at a full-time professional martial
arts school.
When signing up to take lessons we do ask that you consider what it
takes for us to operate our school. We have a
suggested donation of $10 per class or $100 per month for the first
family member. For additional family members we suggest $5
per class or $50 per month, with a $200 per month cap for families.
We do have set fees for yearly membership, private lessons,
testing, workshops and seminars.
Please know that no one will be keeping track of individual donations.
If you are not in a position to pay the suggested donation,
then please know that a donation of any amount is accepted with sincere
gratitude. If you are in a position to pay more than the
suggested donation we do ask that you consider how your generosity will
have a positive impact for someone else.
